October 2025 Letter

Dear brethren,

The Didache, or Teaching of the Apostles, is a small document that introduces the rites and laws of the church, dating back to the end of the first century AD (that is, before the year 100 AD), and was discovered in 1873 AD. It is a very important document from the period immediately following the apostolic era, revealing to us the early church life from all aspects: behavioral, liturgical, and organizational. 

The document contains 16 chapters, and we will quote some important sayings for our benefit:

  • ❖Another name for the Didache is “The Two Ways”, because it begins by saying: “There are two ways, one of life and one of death, but a great difference between the two ways” (1: 1). It then explains the way of life: “The way of life, then, is this: First, you shall love God who made you; second, love your neighbor as yourself, and do not do to another what you would not want done to you” (1: 2).
  • ❖Together with the commandment to pray for those who persecute us, it adds: “fast for those who persecute you” (1: 3). It then adds “But love those who hate you, and you shall not have an enemy”.
  • ❖The importance of being careful in giving charity, so in addition to saying: “give to everyone who asks you’ (1: 5), he adds also: “let your alms sweat in your hands, until you know to whom you should give” (1: 6).
  • ❖Prohibiting abortion and considering it murder: “you shall not murder a child by abortion” (2: 2).
  • ❖The order to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays: “Rather, fast on the fourth day and the Preparation (Friday)” (8: 1).
  • ❖One of the conditions for receiving communion is the necessity to go for confession: “But every Lord’s day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure” (14: 1).
  • ❖The necessity of reconciliation with others before taking communion: “But let no one who is at odds with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned” (14: 2).
  • ❖The necessity of staying watchful in preparation for the coming of the Lord: “Watch for your life’s sake. Let not your lamps be quenched, nor your loins unloosed; but be ready, for you know not the hour in which our Lord will come” (16: 1).

May the blessing of St. Mary, our fathers the holy apostles, St. Mercurius and all the martyrs and saints be with us all. Amen.

إخوتنا الأحباء

الديداخي أي تعليم الرسل، هو وثيقة صغيرة للتعريف بطقس وقوانين الكنيسة، يعود تاريخ تدوينها إلى نهاية القرن الأول الميلادي (أي قبل سنة 100 م)، واكتُشِفت عام 1873 م. وهو وثيقة هامة جدًا في الفترة التي أعقبت مباشرة عصر الرسل، تكشف لنا عن الحياة الكنسية الأولى من كل الجوانب: السلوكي والليتورجي والتنظيمي. 

الوثيقة تحتوي على 16 فصلاً، نقتبس لفائدتنا بعض الأقوال المهمة:

  • إسم آخر للديداخي هو “الطريقان” لأنه يبدأ بهذه العبارة: “يوجد طريقان، واحد للحياة ، وواحد للموت، والفرق بين الطريقان كبير” (1: 1). ثم يشرح طريق الحياة بأنه: “أولاً أن تحب الله خالقك، وثانيًا أن تحب قريبك كنفسك، وكل مالا تريد أن يفعل بك، لا تفعله أنت أيضاً بآخر” (1: 2).
  • مع وصية الصلاة من أجل الذين يضطهدوننا يضيف أيضًا: “صوموا لأجل مضطهديكم” (1: 3). ثم يكمل في نفس الفقرة قائلاً: ” أما أنتم فأحبوا مبغضيكم فلا يكون لكم عدو“.
  • أهمية التدقيق في إعطاء الصدقة، فمع قوله: “كل من سألك فأعطه” (1: 5)، يعود فيقول بعدها: “لتعرق صدقتك فى يدك حتى تعرف لمن تعطيها” (1: 6).
  • تحريم الإجهاض واعتباره قتل: “لا تقتل جنيناً فى البطن” (2: 2).
  • يأمر بصوم الأربعاء والجمعة: “لا تقيموا اصوامكم مع المرائين، فإنهم يصومون فى اليوم الثانى والخامس من الاسبوع، أما انتم فصوموا اليوم الرابع ويوم الاستعداد” (8: 1).
  • من شروط التقدم لسر الشركة ضرورة الاعتراف قبل التناول: “عند إجتماعكم يوم الرب، اكسروا الخبز واشكروا بعد أن تكونوا اعترفتم بخطاياكم، لكي تكون ذبيحتكم طاهرة” (14: 1).
  • ضرورة المصالحة مع الآخرين قبل التناول: “لا يجتمع معكم كل من له منازعة مع صاحبه حتى يتصالحا، لئلا تتنجس ذبيحتكم” (14: 2).
  • ضرورة السهر استعدادًا لمجئ الرب: “اسهروا لحياتكم، لا تنطفئ سرجكم، ولا ترتخ أحقاؤكم، بل كونوا مستعدين، لأنكم لا تعلمون الساعة التى فيها يأتى ربنا” (16: 1).
