August 2025 Letter
Dear brethren,
On the occasion of St. Mary’s fast, we reference a text by St. Athanasius the Apostolic:
“O noble Virgin, truly you are greater than any other greatness. For who is your equal in greatness, O dwelling place of God the Word? To whom among all creatures shall I compare you, O Virgin? You are greater than them all. O ‘Ark of the New Covenant’, clothed with purity instead of gold! You are the Ark in which is found the golden vessel containing the true manna, that is, the flesh in which divinity resides. Should I compare you to the fertile earth and its fruits? You surpass them, for it is written: “earth is My footstool” (Isa 66: 1). But you carry within you the feet, the head, and the entire body of the perfect God.
“If I say that heaven is exalted, yet it does not equal you, for it is written: “Heaven is My throne” (Isa 66: 1), while you are God’s place of repose. If I say that the angels and archangels are great, but you are greater than them all, for the angels and archangels serve with trembling the One who dwells in your womb, and they dare not speak in His presence, while you speak to Him freely.
“If we say that the cherubim are great, you are greater than they, for the cherubim carry the throne of God (Psa 80: 1 & Psa 99: 1), while you hold God in your hands. If we say that the seraphim are great, you are greater than them all, for the seraphim cover their faces with their wings (Isa 6: 2), unable to look the perfect glory, while you not only gaze upon His face but caress it and offer your breasts to His holy mouth.
“As for Eve, she is the mother of the dead: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive” (1Cor 15: 22). Eve took fruit from the tree and made her husband eat of it along with her. And so they ate of that tree of which God had told them: “in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Gen 2: 17). Eve took fruit from it, ate some of it, and gave some to her husband that he might eat with her. He ate of it, and he died.
“In you instead, O wise virgin, dwells the Son of God: He, that is, who is the tree of life. Truly He has given us His body, and we have eaten it. That is how life came to all, and all have come to life by the mercy of God, your beloved Son. That is why your spirit is full of joy in God your Savior!”

إخوتنا الأحباء
بمناسبة صوم السيدة العذراء مريم، نتعلم من بعض كتبات القديس أثناسيوس الرسولي عن والدة الإله:
“أيتها العذراء النبيلة، بالحقيقة أنتِ أعظم من أي عظيم آخر. لأنه من الذي يتساوى معكِ في العظمة يا مسكن الله الكلمة؟ بماذا من بين جميع المخلوقات أستطيع أن أقارِنكِ أيها العذراء؟ أنتِ أعظم منهم جميعًا، يا “تابوت العهد الجديد“، المتسربلة بالطهارة بدلاً من الذهب! أنتِ هي تابوت العهد المخفي فيه الإناء الذهبي الذي يحتوي على المن الحقيقي، أي الجسد الذي يسكن فيه اللاهوت. هل أقارنك بالأرض الخصبة وثمارها؟ أنت تفوقهن جميعًا، لأنه مكتوب: “الأَرْضُ مَوْطِئُ قَدَمَيَّ” (إش66: 1)، بينما أنتِ تحملين في أحشائِك قدمي ورأس وكل جسد الإله الكامل.
“إن قلت أن السماء عالية، إلا أنها لا تساويكِ لأنه مكتوب: “السَّمَاوَاتُ كُرْسِيِّي” (إش66: 1) بينما أنتِ موضع راحة الله. إذا تكلمت عن عظمة الملائكة ورؤساء الملائكة لكنكِ أعظم منهم جميعًا، لأن الملائكة ورؤساء الملائكة يخدمون برعدة الذي يسكن في بطنِكِ، ولا يجرؤون على التكلم في حضرته، بينما أنتِ تتحدثين إليه بحرية.
“إن قلنا أن الكروبيم عظماء فأنتِ أعظم منهم، لأن الكروبيم يحملون عرش الله (مز80: 1 و مز99: 1)، بينما أنتِ تحملين الله بين يديكِ. إذا قلنا أن السيرافيم عظماء فأنتِ أعظم منهم جميعًا، لأن السيرافيم يغطون وجوههم بأجنحتهم (إش6: 2) غير قادرين على التطلع إلى عظمة مجده، بينما أنت ليس فقط تتطلعين إلى وجهه فحسب، بل تعانقينه وتقدمي ثدييكِ إلى فمه المقدس.
“بالنسبة لحواء فهي أم الأموات: “لأَنَّهُ كَمَا فِي آدَمَ يَمُوتُ الْجَمِيعُ هَكَذَا فِي الْمَسِيحِ سَيُحْيَا الْجَمِيعُ” (1كو15: 22). حواء أخذت ثمرًا من الشجرة وأعطت زوجها ليأكل منها، وهكذا أَكَلا من تلك الشجرة التي قال لهم الله عنها: “لأَنَّكَ يَوْمَ تَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا مَوْتاً تَمُوتُ” (تك2: 17). أخذت حواء منه ثمرًا وأكلت بعضًا منه، وأعطت بعضًا لزوجها ليأكل معها فأكل منه ومات.
“وفي مقابل ذلك، أنتِ أيتها العذراء الحكيمة يسكن فيكِ إبن الله: الذي هو شجرة الحياة. بالحقيقة لقد أعطانا جسده المقدس فأكلناه، وهكذا صارت الحياة للجميع، برحمة الله الذي هو إبنك الحبيب. هذا هو السبب في أن روحِك تبتهج بالله مُخَلِّصِك!”
