November 2022 Letter
In last month’s letter learned about the Temple’s construction and destruction, which the Lord Christ foretold. Let’s continue our study and learn about the history of the Ark of Covenant, which is the most holy component of the Temple:
❖ The main reason for constructing the Ark, was to preserve the tablets of the covenant that Moses received on Mount Sinai, after the people’s exodus from Egypt:
“And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you” (Exo 25: 16).
“And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you” (Exo 25: 21).
❖ After Bezalel made the Ark, it was placed in the Holy of Holies all throughout the people’s journey in wilderness.
❖ When they crossed the Jordan River and entered Canaan, it was placed in Shiloh which became their place of worship during the years of Joshua and the Judges.
❖ Towards the end of Judges, when Eli was priest, they took the Ark in the war. One time it was captured by the Philistines whom placed it in the temple of their god Dagon. The Lord struck them, so they placed the Ark on a cart that flee to the Israelites, and it was kept in Beth Shemesh which was a city between the borders.
❖ Afterwards, the Israelites took it and placed it in the house of Abinadab where it stayed there for 20 years.
❖ As King David transported the Ark on a new cart, and when Uzzah touched it and died immediately. David was scared & left it there in the house Obed-Edom the Gittite for 3 months.
❖ After that, David carried the Ark to Jerusalem, where it stayed until Solomon built the temple and placed it in the Holy of Holies.
❖ When the Temple was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar in the year 586 B.C., the Ark disappeared and its place was never found. It might have been burnt with the city and the temple (2 Kings 25: 9).
❖ Upon the return from exile in the year 536 B.C., Zerubbabelreconstructed the temple in the year 520 B.C. King Cyrus returned all the temple’s vessels but not the Ark, which was lost and couldn’t be traced, leaving its place empty in the Holy of holies till the Temple was finally destroyed by the Roman commander Titus on 70 A.D.
❖ In the Book of Revelation we read: “Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail” (Rev11: 19), as if the Lord had taken it to heaven.
The blessing of St. Mary, St. Mercurius and all the martyrs and saints be with us all. Amen
