September  2022 Letter

Dear brethren,

In September, we will celebrate the beginning of the new Coptic year 1739 AM, which is known as the year of Martyrs. It is a good opportunity to learn about the martyrs from an article by HH Pope Shenouda titled “Why did they Love Martyrdom?”:

Our martyred forefathers received martyrdom not only with tolerance and satisfaction, but rather with joy. Thousands of believers moved from Damanhour to Alexandria to be martyred, while on the way they sang joyful hymns.

When the twelve apostles were flogged and threw them in prison, the Bible says: So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name” (Acts 5: 41). Saint Abba Fam the Soldier, when was called for martyrdom, put on his finest clothes and said: “this is my wedding day.”

So why did our fathers rejoice in martyrdom?

They saw martyrdom as the shortest way to the glorious joy of heaven … It is only moments or hours, after which they would be in the arms of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and in the assembly of saints

Therefore, in the story of the martyrdom of St. Ignatius of Antioch, when the people of Rome wanted to kidnap him in order to save him from death, he sent them a message preventing them from that and saying to them: “My brothers, I am afraid that your love will cause me harm. After I arrived, I go back and run the course of my life again.”

They saw martyrdom as a fellowship in the sufferings of Christ, a fellowship with Him in His death, and consequently a fellowship with Him in His glory, remembering what was said in the Bible: “if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Romans 8: 17).

Some of them saw for themselves the crowns that were waiting them. Or saw the crowns of those who were martyred before them. Even without a vision, they trusted with faith what the Lord had prepared for those who love His Holy Name, who accept sufferings for His sake. They believed that martyrdom is the best expression by which they express their love for God and the sincerity of faith. As the Bible says: “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15: 13).

Lastly, they loved martyrdom because they were certain that they are foreigners in this world, and they loved eternity with a love that reigned over all their hearts. They saw death as freedom from the prison of the body.

May the blessing of St. Mary, St. Mercurius and all the martyrs be with us all. Amen.
