February 2022 Letter
Dear brethren,
We learn from the teachings of the late Pope Shenouda, about “Christian behavior”:
Some think that life with the Lord is just faith, or love, or spirit, and it does not matter to virtues or conduct … However the Bible is concerned with Christian behavior, with regard to the judgment itself, thus it says: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit” (Rom 8: 1). Therefore, the behavior of man in the Spirit is what protects him from judgment.
This spiritual behavior is considered as evidence of steadfastness in the Lord, and the apostle calls for a very high standard, saying: “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1John 2: 6).
We are therefore required to behave according to the Spirit, and to set before us in our conduct the example of the conduct of the Lord Christ as well…
And the importance of Christian behavior is what the Lord said: “You will know them by their fruits” (Mat 7: 16).
This behavior has two aspects: positive and negative, and each has its own dangers. That is why the apostle John says: “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1: 7). This is on the positive side.
And what about the negative? The apostle says: “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1 John 1: 6).
Therefore, our Christian behavior is the evidence of our fellowship with God. It is also evidence of our fellowship with the Church… That is why the church separated every brother who does not behave in an orderly manner, as the Apostle Paul reminded the Corinthians with the verse that says: “Therefore put away from yourselves the evil person” (1 Cor 5: 13).
And he says to the Thessalonians: “But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us” (2 Thes 3: 6).
If behavior is not a matter of importance, and the only thing that matters is faith, then why then did the apostle make it the height of his joy, saying: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 4).
We are believers, but we ought to walk as befits our calling (Eph 4: 1). We should make fruit, because every tree that does not bear fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire…

نأخذ من تعاليم المتنيح البابا شنودة كلمة منفعة عن “السلوك المسيحي”:
“يظن البعض أن الحياة مع الرب هي مجرد إيمان، أو حب أو روح، ولا تهم الفضائل أو السلوك … بينما يهتم الكتاب بالسلوك المسيحي، من جهة الدينونة ذاتها فيقول: “إِذاً لاَ شَيْءَ مِنَ الدَّيْنُونَةِ الآنَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي الْمَسِيحِ يَسُوعَ السَّالِكِينَ لَيْسَ حَسَبَ الْجَسَدِ بَلْ حَسَبَ الرُّوحِ” (رو8: 1)، إذن سلوك الإنسان بالروح هو الذي يحميه من الدينونة.
نحن إذن مُطالَبون بالسلوك حسب الروح، وبأن نضع أمامنا في سلوكنا مثال سلوك السيد المسيح أيضًا …
وأهمية السلوك المسيحي، قول الرب “مِنْ ثِمَارِهِمْ تَعْرِفُونَهُمْ” (مت7: 16).
هذا السلوك له ناحيتان: إيجابية وسلبية، وكلٍ منهما لها خطورتها. ولهذا يقول يوحنا الرسول: “وَلَكِنْ إِنْ سَلَكْنَا فِي النُّورِ كَمَا هُوَ فِي النُّورِ، فَلَنَا شَرِكَةٌ بَعْضِنَا مَعَ بَعْضٍ، وَدَمُ يَسُوعَ الْمَسِيحِ ابْنِهِ يُطَهِّرُنَا مِنْ كُلِّ خَطِيَّةٍ” (1يو1: 7). هذا من الناحية الإيجابية.
وماذا عن السلبية؟ يقول الرسول: “إِنْ قُلْنَا إِنَّ لَنَا شَرِكَةً مَعَهُ وَسَلَكْنَا فِي الظُّلْمَةِ، نَكْذِبُ وَلَسْنَا نَعْمَلُ الْحَقَّ” (1يو1: 6).
إذن سلوكنا المسيحي، هو دليل شركتنا مع الله. وهو أيضًا دليل على شركتنا مع الكنيسة …
ولهذا كانت الكنيسة تفرز كل أخ يسلك بلا ترتيب، كما ذكَّر بولس الرسول أهل كورنثوس بالآية التي تقول: “فَاعْزِلُوا الْخَبِيثَ مِنْ بَيْنِكُمْ” (1كو5: 13).
ويقول لأهل تسالونيكي: “ثُمَّ نُوصِيكُمْ أَيُّهَا الإِخْوَةُ، بِاسْمِ رَبِّنَا يَسُوعَ الْمَسِيحِ، أَنْ تَتَجَنَّبُوا كُلَّ أَخٍ يَسْلُكُ بِلاَ تَرْتِيبٍ، وَلَيْسَ حَسَبَ التَّعْلِيمِ الَّذِي أَخَذَهُ مِنَّا” (2تس3: 6).
إن كان السلوك أمرًا ليست له أهمية والمهم فقط هو الإيمان، فلماذا إذن جعله الرسول قمة فرحه فقال: “لَيْسَ لِي فَرَحٌ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ هَذَا: أَنْ أَسْمَعَ عَنْ أَوْلاَدِي أَنَّهُمْ يَسْلُكُونَ بِالْحَقِّ” (3يو4).
إننا مؤمنون، ولكن ينبغي أن نسلك كما يليق بالدعوة التي دعينا إليها (أف4: 1). نصنع ثمرًا، لأن كل شجرة لا تصنع ثمرًا تُقطَع وتُلقَى في النار …
