February 2026 Letter
Dear Brethren,
As we approach Jonah’s Fast which begins on February 2nd, we learn from Pope Shenouda’s contemplations in The Book of Jonah about ‘God is for Everyone’:
One of God’s beautiful attributes is that He accepts all sorts of people and appoints for them portions in His kingdom. In the Bible we find different kinds of personalities and spiritualities … the kingdom of God is likened to a net let down in the sea which gathers all sorts. God called Jonah the obstinate who held to his word. He also called a doubtful man like Thomas and an impulsive person like Peter. He called a gentle and patient person like Moses, and a fiery person like Elijah. He called Abraham who feared and said that Sarah was his sister, and made him the father of all believers. These are different kinds of people whom God takes and works in them with His Grace and His Holy Spirit. It is as if these types of people are a log of wood taken by the “Son of the carpenter” who works with them. He uses part of this beam of wood by the plane, part of it by the saw, and part by hammer. Thus, He keeps sawing, cleaning, and cutting it, making a pattern from it and nailing it until it becomes a nice chair for Him to rest on.
Or as though we are a piece of clay handled by the Great Potter, who molds it until it becomes a vessel for honor. He is God whose Spirit was hovering over the face of the waters and continued to work until He changed the earth which was desolate, void and covered in darkness into this beautiful nature of whose beauty poets and writers sing.
This is what God did with Jonah, with the people of Nineveh and with the mariners. He worked in them all until He altered them into holy temples for His Spirit and granted them purity and sanctity that the excellence of power may be of God and not of us (2Cor 4: 7), and even if anybody glories let him glory in the Lord (2Cor 10: 17), and so that no one desponds of his salvation or of others’ salvation. He is God who brings sweet out of the strong (Jud 14: 14).
Therefore let no one say: my nature is bad, and even worse than the earth which was desolate, void and covered in darkness. I have tried on my own and found that I cannot change, even my father confessors, spiritual guides and teachers have become weary of trying to reform me. It seems that I will remain in the darkness that was before creation, because the voice of God has been echoing in my ears saying, ‘Let there be light’, and I am still in darkness.
No, my brother. Do not despair. He who worked in Jonah is able to work in you also. He who worked in the Ninevites and the mariners is capable of working in you also. He who changes the mud into a vessel for honor is also able to change you in some way.
Be patient and wait on the Lord. But this does not mean that you lax and slack and remain in the mud until the Potter comes.
Repentance needs two things: God’s work and a response from man, as the mariners responded to God’s call and believed and made vows, and as the Ninevites responded and repented returning from their evil ways, and as Jonah responded at the end.
May the blessings of St. Mary & St. Mercurius, and blessings of Jonah’s fast be with us all.

إخوتنا الأحباء
بمناسبة صوم يونان الذي يبدأ يوم 2 فبراير، نتعلم من تأملات البابا شنودة في السفر عن “الله للجميع”:
من صفات الله الجميلة أنه يأخذ جميع عينات الناس، ويجعل لهم نصيبًا في ملكوته. وفي الكتاب المقدس نجد ألوانًا من النفسيات والعقليات … ملكوت الله مثل شبكة في البحر جمعت من كل نوع … دعا يونان العنيد المتمسك بكلمته، كما دعا إنسانًا كثير الشك مثل توما، وإنسانًا سريع الاندفاع مثل بطرس. دعا شخصًا حليمًا وديعًا مثل موسى، وشخصًا ناريًا مثل إيليا. دعا إبراهيم الذي كان يخاف، ويقول عن سارة أنها أخته، وجعله أبًا لجمهور المؤمنين. إنها عينات من الناس يأخذها الله ويعمل فيها بنعمته وروحه القدوس. إنها عينات من الناس كأنها كتلة من الخشب الخام، يتناولها “إبن النجار” ويعمل فيها. عرق خشب، جزء منه يأخذه بالفارة، وجزء بالمنشار، وجزء بالشاكوش. وهكذا يظل ينشره ويمسحه، ويقطعه ويفصله، ويسمره، حتى يتحول إلى كرسي لطيف يستريح عليه.
أو كأننا قطعة من الطين يتناولها الخزاف العظيم، ويشكلها حتى تصبح إناءًا للكرامة. إنه الله الذي كان روحه يرف على وجه المياه، وظل يعمل حتى حوَّل الأرض الخربة الخالية المغمورة بالمياه والظلام، إلى هذه الطبيعة الجميلة التي يتغنى بجمالها الشعراء والأدباء.
هكذا فعل الله مع يونان، ومع أهل نينوى، ومع ركاب السفينة … عمل فيهم جميعًا حتى حَوَّلهم إلى هياكل مقدسة لروحه، ومنحهم النقاوة والقداسة، حتى يكون فضل القوة لله وليس لنا (2كو4: 7). وحتى أن افتخر أحد فليفتخر بالرب (2كو10: 17). وحتى لا ييأس أحد من خلاصه أو خلاص غيره … إنه الله الذي يُخرج من الجافي حلاوة (قض14: 14).
فلا يَقُل أحد: أن طبيعتي رديئة، أسوأ من الأرض الخربة الخالية المغمورة بالمياه والظلام. أنا جَرَّبت نفسي فوجدت أنني لا أتغير، وقد تعب في إصلاحي آباء الاعتراف وكل المرشدين والمعلمين … الظاهر أنني سأبقى في ظلمة ما قبل اليوم الأول للخليقة!! لأن صوت الله ما يزال يرن في أذني قائلاً “ليكن نور” وأنا ما أزال في ظلمتي بعد …!
كلا يا أخي لا تيأس، إن الذي عمل في يونان قادر أن يعمل فيك أيضًا. والذي عمل مع أهل نينوى وأهل السفينة، قادر أن يعمل معك أيضًا. والذي حول الطين إلى آنية للكرامة، قادر يحولك أنت كذلك …
اصبر، وانتظر الرب. ولكن ليس معنى هذا أن تتهاون وتتراخى وتستمر في الطين حتى يأتي الخزاف.
إن التوبة تحتاج إلى أمرين: عمل من الله، واستجابة من الإنسان. كما استجاب أهل السفينة لدعوة الله فآمنوا ونذروا نذرًا، وكما استجاب أهل نينوى، فتابوا ورجعوا عن طرقهم الرديئة، وكما استجاب يونان أخيرًا.
بركة السيدة العذراء والشهيد العظيم أبي سيفين، وبركة صوم يونان تكون معنا كلنا على الدوام.
